Basically you are the character is called "Sackboy" and you can play through developer created levels (Story Mode) to locate stickers and other objects which can be used later in the game. Ultimately, the main objective is the online interactiveness of the game and the ability to create your own levels which can be shared online with other users, and story mode is little more than a way to find objects to be used to create your own levels.
